Did You Know: Closed-Cell / Open-Cell

Did You Know: The Difference Between Open and Closed-Cell Foam?

Foams are created by taking a solid polymer and expanding it with a blowing agent. A blowing agent creates a collection of microscopic cells within a polymer matrix. Foams can be classified as either closed-cell or open-cell.

Open-cell and closed-cell the foam materials behave differently because of the difference in cell structure (shown above). A closed-cell foam resists water and airflow, while an open-cell foam allows water and air into and through the foam.

At Atlas, we only manufacture closed-cell expanded polystyrene foam.
